Perfect Perfumes for Fall Winter 2008From Ralph Lauren's Notorious to David Yurman's Signature Scent
With dozens of fragrances launching this fall, the winter season is not a time for shy wispy scents. Many perfumes are confident and strong, and rich and spicy.
According to Harper’s Bazaar, October 2008 this is not a season for "shy wispy scents". Perfumes are confident and potently feminine, rich and spicy, sexy and musky and romantic and sensuous. Some of fall’s heady and spicy scents include Notorious by Ralph Lauren and Cartier’s Delices de Cartier. This season also sees the launch of jewelry designer, David Yurman’s, signature scent. Notorious - Ralph LaurenNotorious, is sexy, daring and confident with its distinctive pepper smell. It has top notes of spicy pink peppercorn, black currant and Italian bergamot and includes patchouli musk, peonies, carnations vanilla and orris. Composed by Olivier Gillotin of Givaudan, Notorious is Ralph Lauren’s first foray into an oriental, spicy scent. Its inspiration was derived from old Hollywood glamour, with screen icons such as Lauren Bacall and Ingrid Bergman. At $65 for 1.7oz of Eau De Parfum, Sephora describes the fragrance as “a captivating oriental scent” which “is simply unforgettable.” Cartier Delices de CartierAnother of this season’s spicier scents is Cartier’s Delices de Cartier (Sephora 1.6oz EDT spray $85). This is a zesty playful perfume has feminine and fruity floral notes such as iced cherry, freesia, jasmine and violet, plus a dash of pink pepper. Annick Goutal Encens FlamboyantAnnick Goutal Encens Flamboyant ($175, 100ml), as featured in Harpers Bazaar “Most wanted Scents” October 2008, is an unusual intoxicating oriental mix of frankincense, black and pink pepper, cardamom, nutmeg and balsam fir. Encens Flamboyant starts off bright, becomes smokier, mustier for only minutes, and then returns to the scent of fresh fir balsam. David Yurman PerfumeBetter known for his gorgeous jewelry (and as “the cash cow of American jewelry retailing,” according to Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) February 5, 2005), David Yurman makes his first foray into the heady world of fragrances, with David Yurman ($165, 2.5oz) an elegant fusion of bold exotic woods, waterlily and patchouli intertwines. The David Yurman perfume bottle takes inspiration from his jewelry; the design of a faceted gold "flask" floating inside the outer crystal bottle is very gemstone-like. With sculpted gold cap reminiscent of Yurman Cable Collection of jewelry. The bottle neck is created in a form of Yurman's wedding band. Perfume blog Now Smell This refers to the bottle as a “very rare thing, a fragrance bottle that looks even better in person than it does in pictures. It's gorgeous.” David and Sybil Yurman maintain that perfume and jewelry are very similar in design. One is the creation of art with colors and gemstones and the other with notes. According to WWD, February 28, 2008, the couple’s intention was for their signature fragrance to not accentuate only one note. Composed of mandarin, black currant leaf and petals, peony, water lily, rose otto, patchouli, and the boldness of exotic woods and musk, rather than characterize one specific ingredient, the Yurman’s wanted to smell all the notes at the same time. Says Now Smell This, in its David Yurman perfume review of July 22, 2008, “the result is a well blended scent with none of the notes standing out for long.” The Perfect Christmas GiftWith the holiday season just around the corner this is the perfect time to pick a perfect perfume for that special someone. For the woman who has everything then there is always the most expensive (off-the-shelf) perfume in the world, or create a one-of-a-kind very special fragrance courtesty of a bespoke frangrance service.
