The Rolls-Royce of Perfumes

Perfume VI is the Rolls-Royce of scents.

A young and brash Yorkshire man, Arfaq Hussain, founded the company, Gianni Vive Sulman, to make luxury goods. The firm sold such items as extremely expensive watches and Hussain designed clothes for Michael Jackson. These included ‘The Crystal Miracle’, a jacket containing many Swarovski crystals which was meant to create the effect of the Aurora Borealis.

Development of Perfume VI

Hussain decided to commission the creation of the most expensive perfume in the world in 2006. He enlisted the help of the expert perfumer, Arthur Burnham, to develop the scent and told him that he wanted it to be unique and special. Arthur Burnham, who trained in Grasse, was an independent perfumer who developed fragrances for celebrities, royalty, and cosmetics companies.

He used the purest essences for Perfume VI, which was inspired by the Phantom VI Rolls-Royce. He used an ancient formula, which was recently rediscovered, and contained ingredients from over 30 different roses. It also contained ancient essences similar to those found in the tomb of Tutankhamen

Bottle for Perfume VI

The bottle for this perfume was designed by Pierre Dinand. It shone with 18-karat gold, rubies and diamonds. It was finished with a diamond-encrusted wreath.

Box for Perfume VI

The box, which was crafted with wood veneers, was made by S.G. Gordon, the coach makers for Rolls-Royce.

The hand-made key, designed by the famous jewelers Graff, was made of 18-karat white gold and set with many diamonds. A customer could ask for it to be delivered by the naked film-star of his or her choice, reportedly. One wonders whether this request was ever made!

Re-Issue of Perfume VI

Unfortunately, the company went bankrupt eventually. Only 173 bottles of Perfume VI were ever produced. Customers reportedly included Elizabeth Taylor and Mike Tyson. It has become a very expensive collector’s item.

The Hadland Group, which oversaw the production of the original perfume, was going to re-issue the scent if enough interest was expressed.

Other Expensive Perfumes

The most expensive perfume in the world now is Clive Christian Perfume No. 1 which costs over $2,000 for one ounce! This contains mirabelle and tonga wood, as well as many other essences, such as jasmine. It also comes in a beautiful jewel-encrusted bottle. Poivre, Joy and Chanel No.5 are more affordable, but still extremely expensive. Luckily, the Eau de Toilette, which is available for a little over $100, is not beyond most people’s price range.
